BILL McCUBBIN OPEN TOURNAMENT -  (Aug 24, 25 & 26)

The BILL McCUBBIN OPEN came to its conclusion this past weekend at our Swanavon Courts located behind th D Coy Armouries on 9109 - 101 Street.

Apart from the weather being a bit wet on Friday night and somewhat cold on Sunday, the Tournament held up and exhibited some great play, talent and sportsmanship.

A rain delay on Friday caused some game times to be pushed to Saturday morning but thankfully the weather on Saturday continued warm throughout the day.  All matches continued on time and were completed by the end of the afternoon.

All  singles matches were played Friday evening and Saturday.  That left all day Sunday for the Doubles events.

For all results on the draw and matches played throughout the weekend, go to our Draws Page

Players were all from around Grande Prairie and the Peace Country only this year.  Unfortunately, the Defending Champion from last year could'nt make it this year because of personal reasons but the calibre of play certainly did not suffer.  With the familiar names of local Players Angela Perry, Ronila Lanada, Lisa Bancesco, Janet Norman, Julie Schwindt, Andrew Lojczyc, Scott & Henry Kloberdanz, Mike Carriere, Bob McVey, Devin Croft, Rajan Thiyagarajan, Mike Wheaton and the like, the field was extremely competitive in both the Womens and Mens draws.

The prize money was increased this year thanks to the generosity of our local Sponsors IVANHOE and KLEAN-RITECURRY'S JEWELERS again graciously donated a watch this year and ERNIE'S SPORTS donated a number of Gift Certificates.  Our good friends at CHERRY'S LOUNGE, Shane and Jennifer did another excellent job on catering our suppers on both Friday and Saturday evenings with a number of delicious cullinery delights.  The supper that Shane served on Saturday night was fit for a King!  Steak and Salmon was the order of the day and sooooooooooooooo melt-in-your-mouth delicious!!  Thanks Guys!

We hope that everyone that joined in this weekend whether playing or watching, had a great time.  I would  like to thank everyone that helped with the event  including..............Mike Carriere, Scott & Henry Kloberdanz, Shane & Jennifer, Mike Ouellette, Kevin Hilgers, Angela Perry, Raj Thiyagarajan and of course, Julie Schwindt for being there as my right hand girl and for also doing such a great job on decorating the Club Trailer.  Great job everyone!

FUN DOUBLES - July 14 (Saturday 9.00am to 1.00pm)

There were less players signed up this year but we still managed to make it a Fun Event.

Play consisted of 30 minute change offs with a different partner each timed set.  Games were played with a no "Ad" format to make things faster and players kept individual accumulated games score.

The day was hot and sunny with temperatures in the high 20's.  The good news is that nobody passed out with the heat!!!

Congratulations go to  Ronila Lanada  who took the Women's first place prize for most points accumulated and  Sandyman  took the Men's first place.  Way to go guys!

Thanks to everyone else for joining in and making it such a Great Day.

For full results of all these matches, go to our  Draws / Results   page.

 PRESIDENT'S CUP TOURNAMENT:  June 16 & 17

The weather stayed nice and sunny with temperatures hovering around the 20 C mark.  Even though there was a threat of rain in the late afternoon, the clouds disappeared and left us with a great evening to talk about the days singles events.

Sunday was alot similar.  The temperatures remained around the low 20 C. region and doubles play began at 9.30am and continued until mid afternoon.

Our big thanks go to Steven Moon and his Family for sponsoring our event this year and making it an event to remember with the offering of their mouth watering barbecues on Saturday and Sunday.   A treat to behold!  Great job Steve and thanks for all your hard work.  We all appreciated your kindness and goodwill.

Thanks also to all of you that helped out with the smooth operation of the event and Julie as usual, for being there to anchor the registration and sort out the prizes.  What would we do without youz!!!

Hope a good time was had by all!
